Join Oakland Theater Project Artistic Director Michael Socrates Moran for a new class on directing, “The Director’s Lens: Revelations.”
In this four-week class, Michael will interrogate four plays from various celebrated playwrights across the world dealing with the question of apocalypse in their own culture, including a sneak peek into OTP’s upcoming production of Angels in America, so that through these plays we might find the kernel of hope and redemption in the face of seemingly insurmountable catastrophe.
Lecture Classes
Our lecture classes, often entitled as a ‘lens’ class, are intended for both practitioners and theatre appreciators who want to take a deeper dive into how the various layers of theatre can make the major questions of our life come alive. The form of these classes is less participatory than the practicum classes, however discussion, questions and feedback play a major role in the enrichment of the experience. Furthermore, these classes are an opportunity for the artist/lecturer to explore the questions central to their life’s work in community with those in the class and the foundational question at the center of every theatre practitioner’s journey: Why theatre and why today? And, by wrestling with these questions and the ways in which theatre is always a challenge to how we see, the intention is that the class might connect us to new and exciting ways of looking at theatre, our world and one another.
Practicum Classes
Our practicum classes are for those interested in practicing what the class is offering. Unlike the lecture classes, these classes will ask that the participants engage in the practice of building, working, trying, experimenting, exploring elements of theatre. Different classes may be for different levels of experience, however, the goal of the practicum classes is to use the practice of theatre making as a means by which we collaborate and team build across a wide range of different experiences. Please don’t be shy about joining or jumping into a new field - we welcome anyone willing to bring their best self to the work and a generous spirit toward others.
